Neighborhood
Youngsters Enjoy Our Soccer Field
Now
that spring is here, in the late afternoon - mostly weekends
- you can hear the cheers of the youngsters and their parents
from our Carolina Meadows Community Field - better known
as the Soccer Field - at the south end of our property
- as the new season begins. Stop by and watch the youngsters
play.
Ages
of the youngsters range from 5 to 13. Multiple games are played
there on weekends. As many as four different contests may
be going on at the same time. There are many practice sessions
on spring afternoons and these are fun to watch too.
In
1999 Carolina Meadows first became aware of the growing need
for additional recreational space for our neighbors in growing
Chatham County. Responding to this need, our Board of Directors
voted to set aside a portion of our property and develop it
for the children of our local community. So the idea of the
CM Community Field was born. The field not only allows us
to give back something to the local community but also provides
an excellent forum for intergenerational exchanges between
residents, local children and their parents.
Carolina
Meadows built the field and is responsible for its upkeep
and maintenance. The primary users of the facility are the
members of the Chatham Soccer League, the largest recreational
group in the county. The League has grown from 125 youngsters
in 1991 to over 1,000 today.
On
April 8th, representatives of the League will be at the Residents
Association meeting to present Carolina Meadows with a plaque
recognizing our contribution to the County's recreational
facilities. "We are proud to be a good neighbor, " Rob Boening
comments. "Carolina Meadows' primary role is to provide housing
and services to older adults. However, as a charitable organization
our mission also speaks to research, continuing education
and community outreach. We all enjoy watching our neighborhood
children compete on our Community Field."
