About Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is a small city that is the western point of the well-known Research Triangle (Raleigh – Durham – Chapel Hill). It is only 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham Airport.
One Carolina Meadows resident described Chapel Hill as “a northern town in a southern setting.” With a population of about 50,000, Chapel Hill is known for its diversity, vibrancy and independent spirit, serving the needs of its large academic population, suburban families, and the business community.
Home to UNC
Chapel Hill is home to one of America’s largest and most-respected colleges, the University of North Carolina. Academically, UNC is known for its strong undergraduate school, its MBA program (Kenan-Flagler School of Business) and its school of medicine and its affiliated hospitals and clinic. UNC is also known for its dominance in college sports, specifically, its basketball program. The UNC Tarheels contend every year for the national men’s and women’s college basketball titles. UNC also has a long-storied rivalry with Duke University, located a mere 11 miles away to the north in Durham.
A Great Place to Live
Chapel Hill is a perennial favorite on many “top places to live” lists in the media, most recently making “Money Magazine’s Top 100 Places to Live” list. “Chapel Hill made the list because “arts and entertainment are a significant part of life here,’ writes Money. “There are two museums, a historic planetarium, a botanical garden and dozens of pubs and concert venues in the town’s 20 square miles to keep your senses stimulated and your heart content.”
Chapel Hill was also recently ranked 5th on U.S. News’s “Brainiest places to retire”. The article stated “Across the map in Chapel Hill, N.C., residents might spend their evenings paddling out in kayaks to watch the stars with an astronomy educator from the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.”
Great Healthcare
Chapel Hill also provides access to world-class healthcare, thanks to its proximity to both UNC and Duke University Hospitals. People often travel from all over the world to receive care found at these two institutions. Both are dedicated to medical research, innovation and day-to-day clinical care.
A Mecca for Foodies
Chapel Hill has also become a hot spot for pop American cuisine –thanks largely to the town’s entrepreneur-friendly business environment, thriving small farms and national media attention surrounding a few local culinary notables, like Foster’s Market (as seen in Martha Stewart Living), The Lantern Restaurant (as seen in Food & Wine Magazine and Southern Living Magazine) and a variety of locales showcased on The Food Network, including Mama Dip’s, Crook’s Corner, Caffé Driade, The Cackalacky Classic Condiment Company. And of course there’s the world-famous, always dependable and down-home Carolina-style barbecue of Allen & Son.
Great Performances
Also contributing to the attractive Chapel Hill lifestyle is a vibrant music scene. Many talented well-known as well as up and coming bands make tour stops in Chapel Hill and its neighboring town of Carrboro. You can hear anything from rock to blues to classical symphonies. Plus, we have several local theaters that present plays and comedic performances. Just a quick read of the local paper’s “what’s happening” section, and you’ll see just how much there is here to keep you entertained.
Great Business Environment
Chapel Hill combined with the adjacent town of Carrboro are home to many independently owned coffee shops (such as Joe Van Gogh (formerly known as CupAJoe), Franklin Sweets (formerly Amelia @ Chapel Hill), Open Eye Cafe, 3 Cups, Caffe Driade, and Padgett Station) and bars.
