Board of Directors

Carolina Meadows is governed and managed by a volunteer, community-based, Board of Directors.  There are 15 voting members plus three (3) ex officio non-voting positions. The bylaws require five (5) members of the Board to be residents of Carolina Meadows.  The following is a list of the current Board of Directors of Carolina Meadows, Inc.


Thomas M. Miller, MD (Chair)
University of North Carolina School of Medicine

Dr. Miller is a professor of medicine at the UNC School of Medicine. He practices internal medicine and has special interest in geriatric care. He teaches medical students and supervises residents in their care of patients. Dr. Miller graduated from UNC Medical School and completed his residency training in Chapel Hill. He is a long term resident of Chatham County.


Amy M. Gorely (Vice Chair)
Development Coordinator
Carolina Center for Public Service
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Ms. Gorely works as the Special Projects and Financial Manager of the Carolina Center for Public Service at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has a Master of Public Administration degree specializing in nonprofit management from UNC-Chapel Hill and has taken many courses specific to aging through the Certificate in Aging Program also at UNC. She serves as a Preceptor for the Hubbard Program, which trains graduate students from multiple health disciplines to work collaboratively in caring for older patients. Ms. Gorely has completed aging research on person-centered care in long-term care facilities, served on the Steering Committee for the Master Aging Plan in Orange County, and serves on the Wellness Board for the Orange County Senior Centers.


Wayne R. Jones (Treasurer)

Mr. Jones received a B.S. degree in Commerce, with distinction, from The University of Virginia in 1958. He joined the public accounting firm of KPMG in New York City, became a certified public accountant, and was the Manager-in-Charge of the firm’s Kingston, NY office prior to coming to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance in 1972. Mr. Jones also held the positions of University Treasurer, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, and Treasurer of the UNC-CH Foundation prior to his retirement in 1998. His civic activities included serving on the Board of Directors of UNC Hospitals, the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Chapel Hill- Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA, and the Budget and Finance Committee of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro United Way.


David M. Klein, M.D. (Secretary)

Dr. Klein is a native of Washington, D.C. and earned his M.D. degree at George Washington University in Washington. After
internship and two years in the U.S. Air Force (Misawa, Japan), he trained in general surgery and neurosurgery in Boston, Massachusetts and then joined the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he practiced and taught pediatric neurosurgery for 35 years. Since retiring to North Carolina, he has continued to pursue his interests in medical teaching and medical ethics. He is currently Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at UNC and a member of the UNC Hospitals Ethics Committee.


Murray E. Bovarnick (Assistant Secretary)

Mr. Bovarnick holds two degrees from Harvard—a BA in Economics and an MBA from its graduate business school. In a forty-year business career, his field of work was human resources management, and his two principal employers were Lone Star Cement, Inc., where he was Vice President of Administration, and ORC Worldwide, an international management and human resources consulting firm, where he was also Vice President. Since his retirement in 1988, Mr. Bovarnick has been an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association and the National Association of Security Dealers, a mediator of small claims and family/neighborhood disputes, a crisis hotline counselor, an AARP management trainer, and a counselor for the US Small Business Association. At Carolina Meadows he has been Chairman of the Residents Budget and Finance Committee and the Residents Remembrance and Gift Fund Committee, moderator of a weekly current events discussion group, and also host of an annual full-day foreign affairs symposium.


William P. Aycock II
Schell Bray Aycock Abel & Livingston, PLLC

An attorney and founding partner of Schell Bray Aycock Abel & Livingston, PLLC, with offices in Greensboro and Chapel Hill, Mr. Aycock has practiced commercial real estate law for 39 years and is a Board Certified Specialist in Real Property Law, Business, Commercial and Industrial Transactions. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965 with an AB degree in history and served as an officer on active duty aboard a United States Navy destroyer from 1965-67. He then returned to Chapel Hill where he graduated from the UNC School of Law in
1970 with a JD degree (with honors). Mr. Aycock currently serves on the Board of Directors of the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as its Counsel, on the Board of Visitors for the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and on the Board of Directors of Affordable Housing Management, Inc. in Greensboro. His previous civic involvement includes Chair of the UNC General Alumni Association, member of the UNC Board of Visitors, and member of the boards of directors of the Greensboro Legal Aid Foundation, the United Arts Council of Greensboro, the Rotary Club of Greensboro and the Greensboro Youth Soccer Association.


J. Alan Butler
Senior Vice President – Client Services
Weaver Cooke Construction

Born and raised in North Carolina, Mr. Butler received his B.A. Degree from Campbell University. He has been in the design and construction industry for over 30 years, the past 13 with Weaver Cooke Construction as Senior Vice President for Client Services. He is an active member of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the North Carolina Association of Non- Profit Homes for the Aging. Mr. Butler and his wife Carla are residents of Greensboro and are active in the community. He remains a board member and recently served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Advanced Energy Corporation, a North Carolina and global resource that focuses on energy efficiency for commercial and industrial markets and applied building science.


Susan Coppola
Clinical Associate Professor
\Division of Occupational Science
UNC at Chapel Hill

Ms. Coppola, MS, OTR/L, BCG, FAOTA is a graduate of Syracuse University with a BS in Special Education in 1979. She received MS in Occupational Therapy (OT) from the UNC-Chapel Hill in 1985. She practiced OT at Duke Medical Center from 1985-1996, and served as Director of OT from 1990-1996. At UNC-Chapel Hill she coordinates fieldwork experiences, teaches in geriatrics, and serves on interdisciplinary committees to promote education in geriatrics. With the UNC Center for Aging and Health she serves as preceptor in the Hubbard Grant program of interdisciplinary home visits for older adults. Ms. Coppola served as Chair of the Board Certification in Gerontology Panel for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) from 2004-2007 and is first editor for AOTA’s text “Strategies to Advance Gerontology Excellence” published 2008.


Raymond H. Dawson

A native of Arkansas, Dr. Dawson moved to North Carolina in 1951. After completing his doctoral studies here at UNC-CH, he spent a post-doctoral year at Ohio State University, and then returned to Chapel Hill as a faculty member in political science. He has served as visiting professor at Duke and Columbia Universities and as Fulbright Lecturer in King’s College and the London School of Economics of the University of London. At UNC he was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the General College from 1968-72 and then served as Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University system until 1992. He and his wife moved to Carolina Meadows in 2001.


Rosemary A. Hutchinson

Born in the UK and now a US citizen, Ms. Hutchinson received a BA in Social Studies from the University of Hull. In the UK she worked as a social worker for a local authority and for the National Health Service. Since coming to the States in 1982 Ms Hutchinson has worked with the elderly in numerous capacities, mainly as Marketing Director in several facilities including Carolina Meadows Retirement Community. Active in the community, Ms. Hutchinson represented Carolina Meadows on the board of the Chapel Hill & Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. In 1998 she was President of the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill. Now retired, she volunteers for the Mental Health Association in Orange County and other local organizations.


Vivienne Jacobson, Ph.D.

Vivienne Jacobson was born in England, raised in Montreal, and graduated in Science from McGill University. After moving to the
States she earned Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan (Speech Therapy) and from Purdue University (Counseling) and a Ph.D in Education, also from Purdue. She has taught at all levels, with a major part of her academic life on the faculty of Purdue from which she retired as Associate Professor. She has served on many boards both in Indiana and here in Chapel Hill, including the Literacy Council, Child Care Networks, Peer Learning and the Jewish Family Service. At Carolina Meadows she was on the board of the Meadows Assistance Program for two years, served on the Wellness Committee for two years, chaired of the Welcoming Committee, and is active in the Foreign Affairs group.


Robin H. McDuffie, CPA
Shareholder Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A.

Robin McDuffie is a shareholder of Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A. in Chapel Hill where she has thirty years of experience working with individuals, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. She is a principal in charge of attest services, including audit, review and compilation of financial statements. Ms. McDuffie has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. She volunteers her time and talents throughout her community and is currently serving on the board of directors of First in Families of North Carolina.


Stephen E. Pike
President Investors Trust Company

Prior to joining Investors Trust Company, Mr. Pike was Senior Vice President of Central Carolina Bank and was responsible to managing the company’s personal trust offices in eastern North Carolina. From 1980 through 1998, he was employed by Citizens and Southern National Bank (now Bank of America) where he served in a variety of roles including Manager of the New York Regional Office, Director of Investor Relations and Manager of the Georgia Employee Benefit Group. Mr. Pike received a B.A. in Economics from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and an M.B.A.
from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, Mr. Pike is vice president of the board of the Durham Library Foundation and serves on its executive committee. He has been an active board member of numerous community organizations.


Richard J. Richardson, Ph.D.
Former Provost and Vice-Chancellor
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

A Missouri native, Dr. Richardson came to UNC-Chapel Hill in 1969 from Western Michigan University after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Dublin (Trinity) and Tulane University. He twice served as Chairman of the Political Science Department, was Acting Associate Vice-President of the UNC System, Chairman of the UNC Bicentennial Observance and in his last five years, before retirement in 2000, was the University’s Chief Academic Officer as Provost and Vice-Chancellor.


Sallie Comey (Ex Officio)

Born in New York City and raised in Bath, ME, Ms. Comey attended nursing school in Boston. After graduating from Boston Children’s Hospital School of Nursing and St. Joseph’s College in Maine, she continued her pediatric nursing career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City. She was active in many volunteer activities in New Jersey, including President of the Board of Directors of the Kings Daughters Day Nursery, church activities, and the Junior League. She continued her career at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ, where she was Director of Staff Development. After retiring and moving to Fearrington Village, NC, she became president of the Arts and Crafts Organization and a board member of Fearrington Cares, a community health organization. After Ms. Comey moved to Carolina Meadows in 1996, she became an active member in the exercise groups and the women’s golf group, as well as secretary of the Dining Services Committee. She takes an active role in the Episcopal church services on campus. Following two years as Vice President of the Residents Association, she is now the President.


Holly Jean Coward, MD (Ex Officio)
Medical Director, Geriatric Evaluation Clinic Department of Medicine
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Originally from Canada, Dr. Coward moved to the U.S. in 1970 and attended UNC-Greensboro where she earned her BA degree Cum Laude. She received her medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, in 1988. Dr. Coward completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro and two years of training in Geriatrics at the University of Colorado Health Science Center. She was named Director of the Section on Geriatrics and Medical Director of the Continuing Care Center at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Coward later became Medical Director at a nursing home outside of Pittsburgh and Director of the Geriatric Fellowship at Shadyside Hospital. She moved to Chapel Hill in 2000 and is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and serves as Medical Director of the Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Coward enjoys teaching Geriatric Evaluation at the Carolina Meadows Clinic and has a special interest in Osteoporosis.


Kevin A. McLeod (Ex Officio)
President
Carolina Meadows

Mr. McLeod currently serves as the President/Chief Executive Officer of Carolina Meadows. He previously served as Carolina Meadows’ Chief Financial Officer from 1998 to January 2006. Prior to joining Carolina Meadows, he was the Chief Financial Officer at Friends Home, Inc. from 1992 to 1998. He worked in public accounting with the national CPA firm of BDO Seidman from 1990 to 1992 and Bernard Robinson & Co, LLP, CPA’s from 1987 to 1990. Mr. McLeod currently serves as a financial and administrative surveyor with CARF-CCAC, the national accrediting organization for CCRC’s. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and he completed his accounting coursework at North Carolina State University. He is a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He currently serves as Board Member of the North Carolina Association of non-Profit Homes for the Aged. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for SECU Family House and is a member of the East Chapel Hill Rotary.


Russ Glatz (Emeritus Director)

Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Mr. Glatz was on Carolina Meadows’ Board of Director for 13 years, two as Chairman. Mr. Glatz went to UNC on a track scholarship, graduating in 1954. After two years in the Army in the Korean Conflict, he began his career of more than 50 years in trust banking. Mr. Glatz formed his consulting company called Trust Marketing in 1979, eventually moving with his family of four to Chapel Hill in 1983. Three years later he joined the Carolina Meadows Board of Directors while working with the Village Bank. In 1984 Mr. Glatz started his avocation as a USA Track & Field official, highlighted in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics. Today, in addition to his consulting business, Mr. Glatz continues his involvement with track and field.


Axalla J. Hoole, MD (Emeritus Director)

Dr. Hoole graduated from Medical University of South Carolina and came to UNC in 1972 after a fellowship of nephrology and a residency in internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He began practice in general medicine and community medicine, but over the years gradually shifted to an almost exclusive practice in geriatrics. He taught physical assessment as well as served as the Associate Dean for Admissions in the School of Medicine. He was instrumental in the nurse practitioner movement and co-authored the book Patient Care Guidelines for Nurse Practitioners; he also co-edited the book Manual of Clinical Problems in Adult Ambulatory Care. Both books had a number of editions.


Joan Pharr (Emeritus Director)
Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P. A.

Joan Pharr is President of Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A. in Chapel Hill where she has over thirty years of experience working with individuals, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. She is a certified specialist in retirement planning and works extensively with businesses and individuals in this practice area. She developed her firm’s elderCare practice and is the partner in charge
of personal financial services, estates, and trusts. Joan has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and currently serves on the AICPA Council. In addition, Ms. Pharr is a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, where she has served in multiple capacities, currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors. She resides in Chapel Hill where she raised two boys with her husband, Ron. She has spent much time serving not-for-profit organizations by sharing her time and talents on their directors’ boards. In her spare time, you can find her on the golf course, traveling, or with a good book.
