Board of Directors

Carolina Meadows is governed and managed by a volunteer, community-based, Board of Directors. There are 15 voting members plus three (3) ex officio non-voting positions. The bylaws require five (5) members of the Board to be residents of Carolina Meadows. The following is a list of the current Board of Directors of Carolina Meadows, Inc.

Amy M. Gorely (Chair)

Ms. Gorely, a North Carolina native, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994. Interested in public service, she worked for the Triangle United Way and for a consulting company that provided organizational development and strategic planning services to nonprofit and governmental agencies. Ms. Gorely returned to UNC to earn a Master of Public Administration degree specializing in nonprofit management. She worked for many years as the Associate Director of the Carolina Center for Public Service. Ms. Gorely’s passion is to help improve the lives of older citizens, and she has a graduate Certificate in Aging from UNC. She has completed research on person-centered care in long-term care facilities, served on the Steering Committee for the Master Aging Plan in Orange County, and serves on the Wellness Board for the Orange County Senior Centers. Ms. Gorely is taking a break from her career to raise her young daughter and assist her husband, an award-winning author.

Stephen E. Pike (Vice Chair)

Mr. Pike is President of Investors Trust Company in Chapel Hill. Prior to co-founding Investors Trust Company, Mr. Pike was Senior Vice President of Central Carolina Bank and was responsible to managing the company’s personal trust offices in eastern North Carolina. From 1980 through 1998, he was employed by Citizens and Southern National Bank (now Bank of America) where he served in a variety of roles including Manager of the New York Regional Office, Director of Investor Relations and Manager of the Georgia Employee Benefit Group. Mr. Pike received a B.A. in Economics from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and an M.B.A. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, Mr. Pike is vice president of the board of the Durham Library Foundation and serves on its executive committee. He has been an active board member of numerous community organizations.

Steven R. Michalak (Treasurer)

Mr. Michalak is the Treasurer of the Morehead-Cain Foundation, which administers the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation’s first and most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship. He is responsible for all aspects of the Foundation’s financial management, human resources and compliance. Prior to his current position, Mr. Michalak served as the Vice President for Finance and Operations of the Triangle Community Foundation for ten years and, prior to that, as a Financial Analyst at IBM Corp. A Certified Management Account, Mr. Michalak also successfully completed the Certified Public Accounting Exam. He received a B.S. from James Madison University and an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary.

Raymond H. Dawson (Secretary)

A native of Arkansas, Dr. Dawson moved to North Carolina in 1951. After completing his doctoral studies here at UNC-CH, he spent a post-doctoral year at Ohio State University, and then returned to Chapel Hill as a faculty member in political science. He has served as visiting professor at Duke and Columbia Universities and as Fulbright Lecturer in King’s College and the London School of Economics of the University of London. At UNC he was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the General College from 1968-72 and then served as Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University system until 1992. He and his wife moved to Carolina Meadows in 2001.

David M. Klein, M.D. (Assistant Secretary)

Dr. Klein is a native of Washington, D.C. and earned his M.D. degree at George Washington University in Washington. After internship and two years in the U.S. Air Force (Misawa, Japan), he trained in general surgery and neurosurgery in Boston, Massachusetts and then joined the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he practiced and taught pediatric neurosurgery for 35 years. Since retiring to North Carolina, he has continued to pursue his interests in medical teaching and medical ethics. He is currently Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at UNC and a member of the Ethics Committee of the North Carolina Medical Society.

Rosemary A. Hutchinson

Born in the UK and now a US citizen, Ms. Hutchinson received a BA in Social Studies from the University of Hull. In the UK she worked as a social worker for a local authority and for the National Health Service. Since coming to the States in 1982 Ms Hutchinson has worked with the elderly in numerous capacities, mainly as Marketing Director in several facilities including Carolina Meadows Retirement Community. Active in the community, Ms. Hutchinson represented Carolina Meadows on the board of the Chapel Hill & Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. In 1998 she was President of the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill. Now retired, she volunteers for the Mental Health Association in Orange County and other local organizations.

Robert N. Jackson, Ed.D.

Dr. Jackson recently retired after 23 years of work with AARP. As State Director of AARP North Carolina for 16 years, he managed eleven staff and over 1000 volunteers on a variety of tasks including legislative advocacy, educational programs and community service activities across the state. A native of Miami, FL, Dr. Jackson and his wife have lived in Greensboro and Chapel Hill for the last 36 years. He earned his Masters (1977) and Doctorate (1980) degrees in Adult Education with an emphasis in Gerontology from NC State University. He has worked with older adults in a variety of settings including a senior center in Greensboro, the Department of Insurance’ Seniors Health Insurance Information Program, AARP’s Medicare Assistance Program, Legal Aid and AARP North Carolina. Dr. Jackson has also taught courses in gerontology at Guilford College and NC A&T University.

Wayne R. Jones

Mr. Jones received a B.S. degree in Commerce, with distinction, from The University of Virginia in 1958. He joined the public accounting firm of KPMG in New York City, became a certified public accountant, and was the Manager-in-Charge of the firm’s Kingston, NY office prior to coming to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance in 1972. Mr. Jones also held the positions of University Treasurer, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, and Treasurer of the UNC-CH Foundation prior to his retirement in 1998. His civic activities included serving on the Board of Directors of UNC Hospitals, the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA, and the Budget and Finance Committee of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro United Way.

Robin H. McDuffie, CPA

Robin McDuffie is a shareholder of Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A. in Chapel Hill where she has thirty years of experience working with individuals, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. She is a principal in charge of attest services, including audit, review and compilation of financial statements. Ms. McDuffie has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. She volunteers her time and talents throughout her community and is currently serving on the board of directors of First in Families of North Carolina.

Nona Saling, Ed. D., SPHR

Nona Saling has over 25 years experience managing Human Resources in the pharmaceutical, health care, publishing, financial services, and consumer products industries. She is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. Ms. Saling has also designed and delivered training programs in leadership and management skills, train-the-trainer programs, recruiting and interviewing skills, customer service and quality management, and performance appraisal systems and skills. She managed the implementation of self-directed teams in a major business unit and is experienced in team development processes. Ms. Saling has taught Human Resources and Leadership courses at Peace College, Business courses at East Carolina University and Nonprofit Management courses at North Carolina State University. She is now Assistant Adjunct Professor at Elon University, where she teaches Management and Organizational Behavior courses.

Philip D. Sloane, MD, MPH

Dr. Sloane is the Elizabeth and Oscar Goodwin Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Sloane, a geriatrician and health services researcher, has conducted numerous studies, including clinical trials, in long-term care settings. A recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Alzheimer’s Association and of an Academic Leadership Award from the National Institute on Aging, he has served as a consultant to the U.S. Congress on Alzheimer’s Special Care Units and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Sloane co-directs the Collaborative Studies of Long-Term Care (CS-LTC), a program of research that, since 1996, has conducted over 40 funded studies in long-term care settings.

Mariechen Smith

Mariechen Smith calls Connecticut her home state but moved to Carolina Meadows in 1997. She is a graduate of Connecticut College for Women with a major in Economics and Marketing. Her business life included Publicity Director of Northam Warren Corporation in Stamford, CT and an editor of Today’s Woman, a Fawcett Publication. Subsequently, she was a Realtor in Darien, CT and Charlotte County, FL. She earned her Masters in Education from University of Bridgeport in 1968 and was a lecturer on Real Estate at the Stamford branch of the University of Connecticut. After moving to Carolina Meadows Ms. Smith began attending meetings of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners in 1998, an activity she still continues. She ended her Chairmanship of the Residents Association Community Outreach Committee in the spring of 2011 and is currently a member of the Public Relations Committee.

Donald J. Stedman

A native of Western New York, Don Stedman completed his doctoral studies (PhD) in Child Clinical Psychology at Peabody College – Vanderbilt University. He served an internship at Sonoma State Hospital and post-doctoral studies at the Child Study Center of the University of California at Berkeley. In 1963, after two years as Associate Director of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation in Washington, DC, Dr. Stedman and his family moved to the Research Triangle area where he joined the faculty of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at Duke University. In 1968, he returned to Vanderbilt to become Director of the JFK Center for Child Development Research and then, in 1971, moved to UNC-Chapel Hill to serve as Professor of Education and Psychology and Associate Director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. During his 30 years at UNC-Chapel Hill he served for fourteen years as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of North Carolina System and for nine years as Dean of the School of Education. Dr. Stedman retired from the University in 2001. He and his wife Helen moved to Carolina Meadows in 2005 where Don remains active in area programs for children with disabilities and the rich life of Carolina Meadows.

Dianne Stimson

A native of Iowa, Ms. Stimson moved to North Carolina in 1997. She received a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She served as Senior Vice President for the UNC Health Care System until her retirement in 2008. Prior to that position she was Chief Executive Officer of hospitals in Texas and Oregon and Vice President of a hospital in Florida. She served as Chief Administrator for the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She has had management responsibility, in addition to acute care hospitals, for a free standing skilled nursing facility, nursing home, renal dialysis facility, psychiatric hospital and for an HMO. She has managed large primary and specialty physician practices, medical office buildings, and a hospital foundation. Her civic activities include serving on multiple Boards of Directors in Florida, Texas, Oregon and North Carolina. Ms. Stimson is an elected Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Roy Carroll (Ex Officio)

A native of Arkansas, Roy Carroll served as an Infantry officer in Japan and Korea in 1951-53. He earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Vanderbilt University. After a year in England as a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Carroll was Professor of History at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and Professor and Chair of History at Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia and at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. From 1979 to 1999, he was Vice President for Planning and then Vice President of Academic Affairs in the University of North Carolina system. He was Interim Chancellor of UNC-Asheville in 1990-91. He and his wife moved into Carolina Meadows in 2008.

Kevin A. McLeod (Ex Officio)

Mr. McLeod currently serves as the President/Chief Executive Officer of Carolina Meadows. He previously served as Carolina Meadows’ Chief Financial Officer from 1998 to January 2006. Prior to joining Carolina Meadows, he was the Chief Financial Officer at Friends Home, Inc. from 1992 to 1998. He worked in public accounting with the national CPA firm of BDO Seidman from 1990 to 1992 and Bernard Robinson & Co, LLP, CPA’s from 1987 to 1990. Mr. McLeod currently serves as a financial and administrative surveyor with CARF-CCAC, the national accrediting organization for CCRC’s. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he completed his accounting coursework at North Carolina State University. He is a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He currently serves as Board Member of LeadingAge North Carolina (formerly NCANPHA) and is a member of the East Chapel Hill Rotary.
